Recycled, Up-cycled, Eco-friendly and always Handmade.
Full disclosure - at Handmade in Norfolk, we haven't always been eco-conscious! Having recently looked into how acrylic yarns are made, we have made the commitment to no longer purchase these yarns for use in our products.
Acrylic yarn is undeniably beautiful, indisputably cheap and widely available in a vast array of stunning textures and colours. The processes used to make it in factories however, involves using manmade chemicals and high levels of energy, which we cannot always guarantee to be renewable. We have therefore made the decision to commit to the following pledges when producing all future makes.
- We will continue to use up our existing stock of acrylic yarn to avoid it going into landfill (acrylic yarn is not widely recyclable).
- We will not purchase any acrylic yarn in future from major retailers, with the exception of partially used balls of yarn which may be purchased from charity shops.
- All yarn purchased for our hand knitted and crocheted items will be made from either ethically-sourced natural fibres (think organic cotton, bamboo and cruelty-free animal fibres) or will be yarn made from recycled materials, such as plastic bottles.
- All fabric used in our hand-sewn products (such as our luxury scrunchies) will be sourced from charity shops, flea markets and the like. Although we may use manmade in fibres in these products, the aim will be to prevent such fabrics ending up in landfill and damaging our precious environment. For this reason, identical items will be not always be available from Handmade In Norfolk.
